Personal growth is very important. But did you know that there are things that can hold you back without you actually realising?
If you have ever felt like personal growth is an uphill battle, these stumbling blocks very well could be the culprits.
Here are the five enemies of personal growth.
Enemy of Personal Growth # 1 – Learned helplessness
When you feel like a victim or powerless, you will justify bad actions because hey, what’s the point? Bad shit is going to happen anyway, so why even try?
That sort of mindset will always keep you focused on negative stuff, and worse – stuck.
If you believe, really believe, that you are powerless, even when you try you will not really try. You will subconsciously set yourself up to fail. That’s one of the biggest reasons why having the right mindset is SO important.
Do you believe there are things in your life – past experiences etc – that are holding you back?
Why do you believe you can’t move forward?
Enemy of Personal Growth # 2 – Comparing yourself to others
When you compare yourself to others, you are basically justifying your negative situation, setbacks or challenges on external factors. This is yet another way you try to justify not doing anything, as again, the belief is “what’s the point”.
But why does it matter what someone else has, or does?
You can moan and complain all you want, but is that going to help you?
Stop comparing yourself to others, and being jealous of what others have. Focus on your life, and the things you can do.
At the end of the day, if you do not do the work nothing will happen.
Enemy of Personal Growth # 3 – Believing that just learning is enough
A belief that just knowing a lot is good can be a major sticking point. Unfortunately, just knowing about something does not make it happen. Knowledge is great, but until you do something with the knowledge nothing will happen.
For example, you can know all about investing, but how well do you think you will do with investing if you never invest anything?
Enemy of Personal Growth # 4 – Believing that it’s all down to fate
Believing that your fate is fixed and predetermined, that you are born with the destiny you can have, is another invisible stumbling block. Like believing being born into money is the only path to wealth, or that talent is God-given.
If you believe your destiny has already been determined, then you won’t really try.
Enemy of Personal Growth # 5 – Believing that you have no control whatsoever
This is about believing that things are beyond your control and that no matter what you do things will not change.
That is NOT true, and you need to believe that to change things.
You do have control – you control how you react to things, and how you act. You CAN do things that will help you grow and improve and move towards your goals.
But if you believe that everything is beyond your control, you will self-sabotage.
Having faith in your own ability is important, very important, for progress and growth.
