The 3 Essentials For Success

Being successful is to a large degree about doing the right things. If you don’t know what you are doing, you are not on the right track.

If you want to be successful, the starting point is being on the right track.

To help you with that, here are the three essentials for success that you need to have in place, the component parts that will make sure you stay on the right track.

By the way, if you are fairly new to personal development and what it involves, here’s a guide for you to check out:

If you want to be successful, the starting point is being on the right track.

Essentials for Success # 1: Goal

What is your goal?

Here are some questions to get clarity on that:

  • What do you want in life?
  • What do you really want your life to be like?
  • What do you really not want in your life? (deciding what you don’t want can be just as important as deciding what you do want)
  • When you think of your ideal life, what do you see?
  • What do you have on your bucket list?

Having a clear goal(s), and clear ideas of the things you want (and don’t want) in life and what your ideal life looks like helps you remain objective and focused, especially when things go wrong and you meet obstacles and setbacks.

One other thing about having a goal is this – you don’t need to know right away how you will achieve it. That is where the plan comes in.

Every super-successful people started with having a goal, a compelling goal that drove them.

Essentials for Success # 2: Plan

Creating a plan is about figuring out what you need to do to get where you want to go.

One of the easiest ways is to find out how people who are already there, people who are where you want to be, did it.

Planning does not mean you start off with things that will work. No, planning is about having plans and trying things that have a strong likelihood of working out.

Let’s face it, nothing in life is guaranteed. Only because a plan/method worked for someone does NOT mean it will work for you too.

But you won’t know until you try.

So the planning phase is about figuring out all the different paths that can lead to your destination. The rest you will figure out while you are trying them out.

Obstacles and setbacks are normal occurrences, but it is important to not give up.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What can you do to reach your goals?
  • Who do you know (directly or indirectly) who have achieved the goal you want to achieve? How?
  • What is at least one thing you can do today that will help you get closer to your goal(s)?

Essentials for Success # 3: Habits

Working on your goal takes a lot of effort and willpower. But here’s the thing – maintaining your willpower is hard, as there is a limited reserve of it and everyone has good and bad days.

So how do you keep going despite challenges and bad days?

Through creating habits.

Habits (routines and rituals) make it easy for you to do things on autopilot, which makes it easy for you to do things without consciously thinking about them. We do that all the time anyway, so why not create these “automated recurring tasks” for things that will help you move closer to your goals?

Having habits that help you keep moving forward means you won’t have to worry about being in the “right mood” or having down days or being stumped by challenges and setbacks, as you will be on auto-pilot. That will make a massive difference to your progress.

Talk about an awesome life hack 🙂

Habits can be big or small, consistency is what is really important.

If you want to become a writer, for example, you can create a habit to write just 50 words a day to start with. Do that every day, and you will have 1500 words minimum in a month, and way over 18,000 words in a year! That’s not a bad feat if you are just getting started with writing. Consistency really does add up.

Do something small, every day, and build on it.

So now that you can see the benefits of creating habits, here are some questions to get you started:

  • What can you do daily to get you closer to your goals? (these can be small things, consistency is what you need to go for things you can do day in day out)
  • What habits can you create around them?
  • What can you do to make sure that you will stick to the habit(s)?

Do what you want to do so that you don’t have regrets years down the line.
