Valentine’s Day in the age of the new normal
2021 has been a bit of a weird year. Most of the world is still reeling from the impact of the pandemic that hit us last year, and even though things are improving around the world (the COVID vaccine is finally here, yay!), far too many places in the world are under quarantine and lockdowns again.
Even many of the places that are not have strict social distancing and other rules in place, which means that doing what you would normally do on Valentine’s Day (like going out for dinner, etc) might not be an option for this Valentine’s Day.
But fret not, just because you can’t go outside or do the the things you would normally do on Valentine’s Day does not mean you can’t have a special Valentine’s Day. If anything, the limits mean you have to be a bit creative which can actually end up creating a more special Valentine’s Day experience for both of you! The effort always counts, and limits are simply a time for creativity.
You can have a lot of fun at home and have a special Valentine’s Day indoors, and I have for you today several different ideas (including things we are planning to do ourselves) to get you going.

Indoor Valentine’s Day Ideas
Here are five great stay-at-home Valentine’s day ideas to help you make this Valentine’s Day fun, and special.
Watch things together
Ideally watch things that you both enjoy. Better yet, watch things you have been looking forward to watching! For example, my partner and I are big foodies and fans of food related shows. We have been saving “Ugly Delicious” to binge watch on Netflix this year.
Since Valentine’s Day falls on Sunday this year, we can binge watch the series all day! You can do the same. Find things that you are both excited to watch, and then enjoy watching them together.
Does it seem like a lazy way to spend the day? Absolutely. But if Valentine’s Day is not a great day for just being together and chilling out then I do not know what is!
If you want a super-simple idea for things you can do with your partner on Valentine’s day, watching things is a great one to try 🙂
One of the main ways to make Valentine’s day special (well, any day really) is food. A classic way to pleasantly surprise your special person is to wake them up with breakfast in bed. If that is one of your plans for this Valentine’s day, then good for you (surprising your partner with breakfast in bed is a great way to let them know how special they are to you). But even if it is/was not, a great way to have fun together is to cook together.
Don’t worry, you do not have to be pros in the kitchen to cook. It does not really matter how good your cooking skills are, it can be a lot of fun even if you get things wrong or mess up! What really matters is that you are doing it together, and if the food turns out great then that is a great bonus. Just go into it with the idea of having fun, and you can figure the rest out as you go along with the recipes.
If you are really new to cooking but your partner is not then you can just follow along with them. If you are both new to cooking, then you can spend some time going over the recipe and then start!
A great shortcut is to watch a video recipe on Youtube and follow along.
Play card games
Playing card games is one of the most classic indoor activities for adults (and even kids). If you are like me, you have not really played any in a long, long time. But this Valentine’s Day might be the time to jog your memory banks and break out those cards that have been collecting dust.
If you have not played cards before, or don’t really remember any, then use the opportunity to learn a card game together. That can make the whole experience even more fun, not to mention good for your brains too since learning new things helps improve your brain – win win win!
Play board games
Another classic fun indoor activity is to play a board game. Do you remember those times during your childhood when you played board games like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit with your family and friends? I don’t know about you but those are some of my fondest memories. You can have that kind of fun again, and this time with the person that you love.
Playing a board game together can be a lot of fun!
Tip: pick a board game that you will both enjoy, as otherwise it will feel like a drag.
Last on this list of stay-at-home Valentine’s day ideas is probably one of the most things you can do together, and that is karaoke!
No, you don’t neeeed to go to a karaoke bar to do karaoke together, you can do it just as well at home on your computer or laptop.
It’s easy to set it up using Youtube on your computer and then the both of you can just follow along and sing together, no mikes or any other equipment necessary! But even if you don’t have a computer or laptop you can still do karaoke by using apps on your phone!
Singing can be a lot of fun, especially when you do it together.
By the way, don’t worry if you don’t think you sound like a pro – most don’t! The point isn’t to sound like a pro, the point is to have fun so focus on that 🙂

Lazy can be fun!
Over and above, give yourselves permission to be lazy together. This year is not like any other year so far.
Many parts of the world are under lockdown again because of the Coronavirus pandemic which means spending Valentine’s Day outside is not really an option that is available to many. But that does not mean you cannot have fun on Valentine’s Day, not at all.
Just because you are staying home does not mean you can’t have fun – you can stay at home on Valentine’s Day and still have lots of fun! If anything, it gives you an excuse to be lazy and being lazy together can be one of the most fun things you can do together, not to mention romantic and sweet.
By the way, if you guys have kids then these activities will be great to do with them too! Every one of these stay-at-home Valentine’s day ideas will make for great activities to do with the whole family.
Valentine’s day is about reminding your special person that they are special, and is a time for bonding. Few things can do that then having fun together. These indoor Valentine’s day ideas will get you going with that.
