We are always standing at crossroads. No matter the person, we are always confronted with choices everyday. And with every choice you make, you are not choosing several other options out there. We make choices for lots of big and little things – in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, choosing the seat on the bus or train, and so on. Even deciding not to do anything is a choice (although this may be the least constructive one).
It can be extremely difficult to know what the right choice is. So what exactly is a good choice? Good choices are decisions that point you to the direction of your goal. Bad choices, conversely, are decisions that turn out to be counterproductive and may lead to stress, feelings of confusion and despair.
So, how to select the best option in the face of life’s crossroads? Here are some tips:
Acquire as much information as you can about your situation.
When making a decision, use the five W’s: what, who, when, where and why. Gather as much information as you can – then you can confidently make a decision regarding whatever it is you are faced with.
Ask what the situation is. Who are the people involved. When this happened. Where this is going. And why you are in this situation.
The 5 W’s are a good way to get clarity about your situation.
Identify and/or create options
When it comes to making a decision, consider what options are available to you. Sometimes, the options can be few, but every so often there are many.
What if the circumstances offer you no options? Then perhaps, generating your own option is the way to go. Be creative and think of every possible idea, especially the out-of-the-box ones. Leave no stones unturned. Sometimes, the most extreme idea can be the right one in the end.
Weigh the pros and cons of every option
Analyse every one of your options by looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each. This way, you can gain additional insights about the outcome and consequences of every option available to you.
Once you make a decision, stick with it. Be confident in making your choice. Remember that there are no guarantees in life, so make the best decision you can and believe that you are making the best choice at that moment in time.
Making good decisions is an essential part of our daily lives. Most of the time, we make decisions efficiently and seamlessly. Now and then, however, there will be times where making the right decision can be challenging. When this happens, consider the options you are considering and make a clear decision. Above all, take action, rather than drowning in possibilities and deciding to do nothing, as that is usually the worst decision of all.
