We are always told to dream big – at least in recent times anyway.
Nowadays it’s all about moonshots and big hairy goals – and that’s great.
Sadly though, most of the time our dreams remain just dreams – far from any visible signs of becoming a reality.
A lot of people find it hard to make their dreams a reality because there is a tendency for them to associate the word ‘impossible” with setting goals. The goals seem too hard, and unattainable. They think they can’t do it, that the big dreams are just too big, too difficult, too challenging, too impossible…
Defying the impossible
If everyone thought this way, then there would be no inventions, no innovations, or breakthroughs in human history.
Take, for example, the bumblebee. According to scientific and aeronautical principles, they should not be able to fly – their bodies are way too big and heavy, and their design not conducive to flight. Luckily, nobody told the bumblebee that (or the bumblebee just doesn’t recognize the word “impossible”). The unassuming bumblebee knows no limits, and it flies. It flies defying the limits of what we believe to be possible.
The impossible is achieved all the time – that’s how the Wright brothers achieved flying, and how men went to the moon. The impossible is only impossible until it is not.
That said, if you limit yourself with self-doubt and self-limiting assumptions, then it will be a challenge to believe that anything is possible – especially when it comes to big dreams.
It is also important to note that you have to work on your goal. If you don’t do anything to make your dream/goal a reality then you will just be clinging to an impossible dream.
Achieving your impossible dreams
So it turns out achieving the impossible is possible.
How can you achieve your dreams then?
Start by breaking up your dreams into as many small actionable steps as possible. This will help you clarify what needs to be done to reach your destination. It will also help you realise that what seemed to be impossible, is actually not impossible.
Difficult, and challenging yes – but not impossible.
As Thomas Edison said, “genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” To achieve your dreams, you have to work hard. You have to be disciplined at all times because consistency is vital. Also, take note that the 1% inspiration Edison referred to, it is about thinking big – so don’t hold yourself back when you think about your dreams, the sky is the limit.
The way to achieve your big dreams is to think big and work hard. Learning how to overcome your limiting beliefs can help with the first, and learning how to master your willpower can help with the second.
Keep at it, and you will eventually realize that the impossible has become a little bit more possible. That’s how it works – that is how tiny droplets become massive rivers and oceans.
Here’s to your impossible dreams.
