Saunas can be great for you, but there are a few things you need to be mindful of when using a sauna, especially if you are new to this.
If you are a beginner, have a read of the five tips below to get the most out of your experience in the sauna.
Here are the 5 Sauna tips for beginners:
Sauna Tip # 1: Stay hydrated
You will sweat, a LOT. So it is important that you don’t get dehydrated. Being in the sauna is great for you, but not if you end up getting severely dehydrated. Make sure you drink water, both before and during the experience.
Bonus Tip: Add a big pinch of sea salt to your drinking water to help recover the electrolytes you will lose when you sweat buckets!
Sauna Tip # 2: Don’t overdo it
It can be tempting to spend hours on end in the Sauna. Surely more is better right?
Wrong. Like everything in life, too much of Sauna is bad. The idea is to help your body, not burn it!
So how much time should you spend in the sauna? The consensus for the max amount of time you should spend in a sauna is an hour. Although, 15 minutes is the more recommended option.
If you are just starting out, try it for 10-15 minutes, then take a break. If you feel up to it, you can go back in.

Sauna Tip # 3: Don’t eat right before
It is better that you don’t have a heavy meal at least for an hour before getting in the sauna.
During the sauna process, your circulatory system gets a boost, which is great for your health. Your body’s systems don’t need the distraction of dealing with your digestion. So to get the most out of your sauna session, let it do its thing, don’t get in the way by eating soon before sauna.
Sauna Tip # 4: Listen to your body
This is an important point to remember, especially if you are new to sauna. Listen to your body. By that I mean watch out for any signs of discomfort like headache, queasiness, lightheadedness, etc.
Get out if you are uncomfortable. It’s not the end of the world, and you can always try later when you are feeling better.
It is better to be safe than sorry.
Sauna Tip # 5: Take a shower after
Being in the sauna helps get all sorts of crap out of your body, through your skin. So it is important to wash yourself after being in the sauna.
You will feel fresh and rejuvenated after 🙂
Bonus Tip: Use a loofah or scrub to exfoliate your skin, as you can clean your skin better because the pores of your skin open up as a result of the heat.
